![]() Thanks to the abundance, variety, and instant access of content online, many fall down internet rabbit holes which are often spectacularly, and addictively, niche: scary stories, obscure conspiracy theories, or famous last meals, for instance. ![]() We mean that we got interested in something to the point of distraction-usually by accident, and usually to a degree that the subject in question might not seem to merit.” If you’re Neo in the hit film The Matrix, you can take the red pill-a pill that shows you the truth, as opposed to the blue pill, which keeps you in ignorance-and “see how deep the rabbit hole goes.” In a related note, some people literally take pills and go down the rabbit hole of a psychedelic drug trip.īut as Kathryn Schulz observed for The New Yorker in 2015, rabbit hole has further evolved in the information age: “These days…when we say that we fell down the rabbit hole, we seldom mean that we wound up somewhere psychedelically strange. One can fall down the rabbit hole of government bureaucracy, healthcare, obtaining a green card, tax law, the political economy of modern Japan, puberty, college admissions, or quantum mechanics. Rabbit hole has many metaphorical applications-from frustrating red tape to the mind-bending complexity of science to hallucinations during altered states-all united by a common sense of passing into some labyrinthine, logic-defying realm that, once entered, is hard to get out of. It’s especially used to reference magical, challenging, and even dangerous places or positions, similar to Carroll’s topsy-turvy Wonderland. The Oxford English Dictionary finds the first allusive rabbit hole in a 1938 edition of The Yale Law Journal: “It is the Rabbit-Hole down which we fell into the Law, and to him who has gone down it, no queer performance is strange.” Over much of the 20th century, rabbit hole has been used to characterize bizarre and irrational experiences. Since then, Carroll’s rabbit hole has proved a popular and useful reference. In its opening chapter, “Down the Rabbit-Hole,” Alice follows the White Rabbit into his burrow, which transports her to the strange, surreal, and nonsensical world of Wonderland. ![]() But the figurative rabbit hole begins with Lewis Carroll’s 1865 classic, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. ![]() The earliest written record of the phrase dates back to the 17th century. Literally, a rabbit hole is what the animal digs for its home. ![]() ![]() ![]()
Shadow of Mordor is a fun game for any fan of LOTR and allows for some fun and interesting gaming. Its especially worth it if you love the Tolkien books, though don't expect anything too deep. Shadow of Mordor may not be the classic it was heralded to be on release, but its still worth playing if you haven't done before. This GOTY release contains all the DLC, which isn't a great selling point since its mostly average stuff. ![]() It becomes a little too easy to take down enemies (even though they do respawn there's just no challenge at a certain point). The game though has the same problem as the Arkham games, once you get through the story mode there's little to keep you playing or want to come back. It could have delved deeper into the lore, but perhaps the limiting gameplay didn't allow for this. The story is a little too light for Tolkien, though it does follow characters from his Silmarillion book. The best bits of the Arkham games wrapped into one. Sneaking into strongholds and taking down Orc leaders is a lot of fun. Its a little too lifeless for a game set in Middle Earth. MIDDLE EARTH SHADOW OF MORDOR GOTY DLC ON DISC FULLTolkien's work was full of people, races, culture, tradions etc, here we see little of that but war torn battlefields. However the environments are really samey, muddy fields with ruined forts. ![]() When dealing with ugly looking Orcs it probably doesn't need to be. The game looks nice, though perhaps nothing stunning. MIDDLE EARTH SHADOW OF MORDOR GOTY DLC ON DISC PS4At the time there wasn't much to shout about on the PS4 and the game's Nemisis System gave that next-gen dynamic people were looking for (certainly after the hype of Destiny's own being no more than multiplayer horde mode). Shadows of Mordor doesn't exactly deserve the very high praise the critics gave on release. Shadow of Mordor is a must have for fans of the Lord of the Rings franchise and action games. The game is great overall with little to complain about. In comparison to the open world the campaign feels short, but is better than expected from previous Lord of the Rings games. The campaign isn't canon to the Lord of the Rings lore, but does provide some interesting twists and challenges to drive the player throughout their playthrough of the game. There is a Vendetta system used in the game allowing friends to attempt the captains that were difficult throughout your experience in Mordor. The system provides challenges with captains gaining power and new resistances, which the player needs to overcome to defeat them in combat. What makes Shadow of Mordor different from other games in the action genre is the use of the nemesis system which allows the user to manipulate the world around them through ordered assassinations and forcing orcs to provide information on captains weaknesses. Wither it's collecting artifacts to empower your weapons or going on a hunt for rare creatures and herbs for new abilities. Instead of Riddler Riddles the game offers a varied amount of collectables and progression within the open world. MIDDLE EARTH SHADOW OF MORDOR GOTY DLC ON DISC SERIESThe game has a similar combat systems used in the Batman Arkham Knight series with stealth take downs and combat finishers to defeat enemies. Shadow of Mordor offers a unique take on the past games based on the Lord of the Rings franchise. ![]() ![]() ![]()
